My 5 articles
1) My first chosen article is on the shortage of teachers schools are expecting to face, i chose this article as not only does it fall under the 'academic' category, but is also what i feel is an important issue facing society as the lack of teachers significantly impacts the future generation and can be proven to be detrimental to the progress of our country.The article itself is insightful and addresses the issue we face, along with the stats to back up these points. I believe the intended audience parents with younger children as they worry this will have a negative effect on there children's future.
Extension: in the article the writer uses is quotes from people relevant to the issue such as David Laws who was formerly the education minister. these are also backed up by statistics which strengthen these points, an example of these techniques being used can be found in the article where the writer is discussing the lack of teachers and introduces the audience to David Laws by referring to a quote of his saying "government faces a significant challenge to recruit teachers-particularly in subjects such as maths and sciences", he backs this point up by him stating "that as little as half of GCSE maths teachers have a maths or science degree.", the use of this quote followed up by a statistic strengthens his point and almost, manipulate the audience into believing the points being made and thus, forming an opinion that favors the writers own.

2)The second article I looked into was in regards to a fall in places for students in secondary schools, this i felt was an important article as it looked into a serious issue that many younger people will be having to face as they compete to get a place in a school which is crucial to there future opportunities of becoming employed .
I believe the targeted audience, much like the first article I reviewed, is parents of younger children, this article could potentially scare some parents who fear their children will be unable to attend a local secondary school and thus further their education.
Extension: In this article we see the technique of lexis being used to convey the impact of not expanding the amount of places available to children who wish to attend secondary school in the UK. An example of this being used is when the school system is described as being "fragmented", the use of this auxiliary verb clearly shows the writer is clearly unhappy with the state of the current school system and for this matter, emphasizes the reality of the issue. This is effective as it aims to make the audience aware of the issue at hand and somewhat scare the reader into believing the point.

3)The third article i chose to review focuses on a big problem faced in every school across the country, bullying. I like this article as it raises a valid issue that affects millions and can have long lasting effects. I believe the target audience is yet again parents as this article aims to raise awareness on the topic and aims to encourage parents to check if their children suffer from bullying.

4)The fourth article I decided to look into looks to critique the new grading system, claiming the new GCSE grading system(1-9) is flawed and may lead to 'inaccurate results'. I feel this is relevant to people my age as the integration of this new system has affected everyone, one way or another. I also believe we are the intended target audience as well as parents, who have children that recently took their GCSE's.

5)The final article i looked at discussed the issue of private schools unfairly helping students so that they achieve the best grade possible, this is important to many others as it greatly affects their own results, possibly leading to a lower gradefor students that attend regular state schools. i believe the target audience,similar to all the previously mentioned articles/subjects, is parents and students who have done the exams as they feel somewhat 'cheated' due to the private schools giving their own students an unfair advantage over the rest of young people in the country.
