Accentism article

Accentism Article

'accentism is a real thing- just ask us brummies' is an a informal written article which raises the issue of how the Birmingham accent  is constantly mocked and how it negatively affects those who have the accent. the intended audience for the article is those who take the mick out of such accents and why it should be stopped.

As we begin to read the article, the issue is immediately addressed as the author negatively speaks of how people mocking the Birmingham accent negatively affects him, saying 'its hard speaking in a way that everyone in the UK detests and continually rips the piss out of ', this sets the tone for the rest of the article as he continues to discuss this problem. The author also mentions how in a supposed 'fair and equal' society, people are still discriminated against over their accents, saying 'its ok'. this is done to somewhat mock society for believing itself to be more righteous than it is and something like 'accentism' is halting society from achieving equality. The idea that 'accentism' leads to negative impacts on someones identity is conveyed through the article, with the author stating how he and other Birmingham people have a 'self hating' feeling toward their own accent.

The author is shown to express their distaste of his own accent and how other peoples views is able to change his own opinion and feel ashamed of his own accent and identity., the author also notes how it would be nice to have a respected accent he is not ashamed, saying ' it'd be nice to feel pride in the way i speak', this further strengthens the idea that accents are closely linked to our identities. The idea that the bombardment of abuse from other non-brummies causes conflict inside of those who have the accent, this is mentioned by the author stating 'A common framework which is used throughout the article is lexis, this technique is used to depict the authors emotions on his own accent and how people react to it, saying how he 'simultaneously feel ashamed at this betrayal of their self identity'.
