Response: compare and contrast how text A+B create meanings and representations


In both texts, the writers use language to convey shock at the amount of  money being spent on prom. In text A, the writer highlights the sheer amount o money is spent, saying "it's crazy the amount of money some people spend", example text B also highlights this as it  discusses proms as "sending sales of tuxedos rocketing". The adjective 'crazy' is used to represent the amount of money people spend on prom and how it is ridiculous. The use of the progressive verb 'rocketing' is used to represent the increase in expenditure by boys on prom. 


In both texts we also see girls being represented as 'prom obsessed' which is typically a stereotype society interpret. This is evident in text A where the writer discusses how they feel forced to "browse the wares of limbo hire companies, tiara makers photographers, etc.?" the use of this list is used to call attention to the amount teenagers typically expect to spend on prom and clearly shows is for girls as the writer lists 'tiara makers' which is stereotypically for girls. It is even more evident in text B that the writer is making use of this stereotype by labelling a sub-section of girls preparing for prom as 'promzilla', the use of this neologism, which is derived from the title 'Godzilla' which is a well known monster in pop-culture, is used to convey the writers view on prom obsessive teens as like monsters.


A difference that can be noted in the texts is the use of grammar. Text A has a tendency to use simple, short sentences which shows a less professional approach. the Text A also uses written words to mimic speech, this is expected as it is a typical element of an online internet forum as they tend to give strong opinions rather than present as real story. Text B is  quite the opposite as the writer has had time to consider written expressions. The writer also is shown to use a large number of long, complex sentences. It is clear that both texts are divided by genre classification with text A being more opinionated and text B shown to be more professionally written. This clear difference affects their grammatical structure.

Police Text Analysis How does text A use language to create meanings and representations In text A, we are presented with an informal interview with a police officer who is questioned on the subject of ‘policing’. The writer aims to appeal to the audience through the language, in this case the intended audience is teenagers who are interested in policing. This is done through such techniques as incorporating colloquial terms that the age group are familiar with. The noun ‘cop’ is used by the writer to relate the website with the intended audience as it is a term commonly used by adolescents. Evaluate The Idea That Some Accents And Dialects Are Viewed More Favourably
